Oaxaca: A place of great beauty, diversity and cultural richness can be found in southern Mexico and is famous for its biodiversity, excellent cuisine, artistic splendor and breathtaking landscapes. The musical community is one of the strongest in the country with an extensive history in band and woodwind pedagogy. Oaxaca's historic downtown is colorful, vibrant, and inspiring to all who encounter it. The artistic achievement in Oaxaca is astonishing and is home to some of Mexico's greatest artists including Rufino Tamayo and Francisco Toledo. It is also home to some of Mexico's most renowned composers such as Macedonio Alcalá and Álvaro Carrillo. Benito Juárez, who was born and raised in Oaxaca, became Mexico's first indigenous president in 1861 and is still considered Mexico's best and most beloved president.
One of SA's primary missions is to promote and support underserved talent in Oaxaca as well as all of Mexico that is in need of excellent educational opportunities. We believe that Mexico's university students are some of the most dedicated and passionate students in the world. Their commitment, discipline, and deep sense of gratitude inspire us to provide a platform for them to continue their musical growth and reach their artistic potential.
Where can I stay during the festival?
Oaxaca is a touristic city and has many hotel and hostal options in the center of the city and its surrounding areas. Here are a few recommendations:

What to bring:
Folding stand for personal practice. (Stands will be available to SA' participants in the Facultad de Bellas Artes - UABJO and in the concert venues)
Music you plan to perform and/or work on during the the festival including at least 2 scores per ensemble for coachings, rehearsals and masterclasses.
Dress code for concerts: We highly encourage our participants to use some kind of Mexican traditional garments (of any color) for concerts, but it is not required. These can also be purchased at very reasonable prices in Oaxaca. Otherwise, please adhere to the following requirements:
Ladies - Black dress or skirt below the knee OR formal black slacks & blouse.
Gentlemen - Black formal pants/formal footwear/dress shirt with or without formal jacket.
Personal belongings - this includes what you know you will need during your stay (Recommendations: bath towel, toiletries, hat or cap, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, insect repellant, umbrella).
The temperature in Oaxaca can range anywhere from 81°/55° F. It is recommended to bring clothes for both warm and cool climates.
For security reasons, it is highly recommended (but not required) to have instrument insurance. SA' does not hold itself responsible for any stolen and lost belongings.
